Original lithograph in black ink. 1922. Signed in the stone. From an intended edition of 525 impressions with the signature in the stone - see note below. Commissioned by Edmond Frapier 1924. Printed at Atelier Duchatel, Paris 1924. Issued in the series: Album des Peintres Lithographes, Paris 1925.

Note: About half the edition of the lithographs in this album was destroyed by a bomb which hit the building in the Paris suburbs where it was stored during the War. The surviving edition, according to Frapier’s son, was not more than 250 impressions).

Extremely fine impression. On off-white chine volant paper. Excellent condition. Full margins. Sheet: 275 x 365mm. Image: c.230 x305 mm.

This work marks Matisse’s return to the medium of lithography after the line drawn Fauve works of 1913-16 period. It is one of his earliest explorations of the odalisque theme, with their rich contrasts of surface, which was to dominate many of his lithographs and paintings of the 1920’s.
