Note: About half the edition of the lithographs in this album was destroyed by a bomb which hit the building in the Paris suburbs where it was stored during the War. The surviving edition, according to Frapier’s son, was not more than 250 impressions).

This work marks Matisse’s return to the medium of lithography after the line drawn Fauve works of 1913-16 period. It is one of his earliest explorations of the odalisque theme, with their rich contrasts of surface, which was to dominate many of his lithographs and paintings of the 1920’s.
