Toulouse Lautrec found his main inspiration amongst the actresses, singers and performers in the theatrical and music hall world of Paris in the mid 1890’s. With his incomparable understanding of pose and inspirational drawing he created works in which the images and atmosphere of that degenerate and frivolous era are preserved for ever.  He was also a genius in his innate understanding of how to combine the style of his drawing with the special graphic qualities of lithography. This famous study of Ida Heath performing on stage is amongst the best known of Lautrec’s lithographs of this era.

Ida Heath was an English dancer and performer who found great success and fame in Paris in the early 1890’s. She was renowned for the vigorous style of her movements but at the same time for her stage presence and musical interpretation. Lautrec also drew her in lithography in the same year in a subject called ‘Au Bar – In the Bar’ in which he makes play about the shape of her body and the profile of her nose.
