Pablo Picasso, 1881-1973
Original ceramic pitcher in white earthenware (terre de faience) with hand-painted decoration and un-glazed. 1955. Inscribed on the base as: ‘Edition Picasso’ and with the ‘Edition Picasso’ and ‘Madoura Studio’ relief stamps. From the edition of 500.
Ref: A.Ramié – Picasso The Ceramics no 288.
Note: Whilst working on his ceramics Picasso became fascinated by the way in which he could transform the visual and emotion effect of an object through the amalgamation of a traditional form, such as a ‘wine pitcher’ as here, with the characteristic flowing strokes of his painting. ‘Visage’ has strong links with his studies of Jacqueline in the paintings and drawings of the same period.
Pitcher: Height 310 mm.
