Jean (Hans) Arp
Jean (Hans) Arp, 1887-1966
Original etching in black ink - together with an original hand die-cut relief by Arp of the same form in wood. 1950/51. Signed in pencil on the etching. The etching numbered (20) from the edition of 70.
Note: This work is very rare. The etching and the wood relief were made by Arp for a proposed edition for an album: ‘Les Rois Mages - The Magi Kings’ to be issued by Pierre Argillet, Paris. The album was never completed or issued, just a very few examples of the etching and the block, mounted as conceived by Arp and Argillet, seem to have survived. The work was unknown to Arntz when he compiled the catalogue of Arp’s graphic work.
Excellent rich impression in pristine condition; the block with one irregularity from the cutting, as is typical of such cut forms. Etching on hand-made cream paper. Full small margins, as printed. Sheet: 380 x 282mm. Plate: 342 x 253mm. 13 ½ x 10 ins. The woodblock overall: 362 x 272mm. 14 ¼ x 10 3/4ins.
