Marc Chagall, 1887-1985
Le Bouquet Rouge. Red Bouquet
Original lithograph in colours. October 1969. Signed in pencil. Numbered in pencil from the edition of 50. (There were also 25 impressions ‘for the artist’). Drawn and printed at the Mourlot Studio, Paris 1969.
Provenance: Private Collection. USA.
Extremely fine impression with excellent colours. On pale cream wove Arches paper. Generally excellent fresh condition; just the slightest trace of time toning in the outer margins. Full sheet as issued. Sheet: 760 x 530 mm. Image 560 x 385 mm.
Note: The very inventive handling of colour in this composition reflects Chagall’s great enjoyment in working in lithography at this period. The background forms of the flowers in the vase are deliberately worked in the black ink so as to act as a foil to the way that the brilliant colours of the petals seem to be in a constant sprinkled pattern of moving colour. In particular note how the touches of pale blue sparkle and flicker.
