Note: The compositions for the 'Arabian Nights' were Chagall's earliest works in colour lithography. In 1948 he had already worked in monochrome lithography in black but he was taught how to use colours by Albert Carman. It was a revelation to him and thecolour works in this series have a vibrancy and 'enjoyment' of colour which makes them seminal in his whole oeuvre. It was as a result of the 'Arabian Nights' that colour lithography became one of the most important aspects of Chagall's whole work.
