Note: In 1964 Chagall was asked to draw a lithograph poster for the exhibition of lithographs from the Mourlot Studio at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington. He made a much simpler version of this composition, and then after the posters had been printed, he returned to the stones, adding several additional colour stones and developing and re-working the composition into this, one of his greatest colour lithographs of the 1960’s.
Superb impression with beautiful colours. On pale cream wove Arches paper. Excellent condition, the slightest trace of an indentation in the upper image. Full margins. Sheet: 716 x 526mm. Image: 657 x 490mm. 25 7/8 x 19 1/4ins
