Drawing in colour pastels over the base of a proof lithograph in black. 1969. Signed in blue pen. Inscribed by Chagall in pen: 'Pour Gerard'. Also inscribed in pencil as: 'épreuve d'artiste' - proof. Unique in this form.
Note: The black lithograph base in this work exists in 11 impressions only. It was subsequently worked up with colours, linked to but varying extensively from this pastel, at the studio of Mourlot and issued in an edition of 175 for the album 'La Mise en Mots', Editions Skira Geneva 1969.

Superbly fresh pastel colours. On cream velin d'Arches paper. Excellent condition with just a suggestion of time toning. Full sheet: 365 x 322mm. Image overall: 285 x 233mm. 11 1/4 x9 1/8ins.
