Marc Chagall, 1887-1985
Jour de Mai. Day in May. 1971/72.
Gouache, watercolour, touches of oil paint and chalk. 1971/72. Signed with the signature stamp (applied by the Comité Chagall). With a certificate from the Comité Chagall.
Provenance: Ida Chagall, The Chagall Family. Private Collection, France.
Note: The point of departure for this painting was an incompleted first proof in black lithographic ink with Chagall’s first ideas for the composition which was subsequently extended and worked-up at the Mourlot studio to become the lithograph ‘Jour de Mai’ (M.654). Chagall worked over the black ink in a combination of gouache, watercolour, chalk and oil to create the richness of colour and light in this painting.
