Pierre Auguste Renoir
Pierre Auguste Renoir, 1841-1919
La Danse à la Campagne. The Country Dance. c.1897.
Original softground etching in black ink. c.1897. Signed with the artist's stamp signature (no impressions were hand signed) . From the only published edition. Etched c.1897. This impression one of the first 100 impressions on japan paper printed by Louis Fort, Paris c.1908. There were subsequent editions on velin and heavy cream wove paper (papier teinté). See notes below. Issued by Ambroise Vollard. The first japan paper impressions are rare.
Note: Renoir probably drew this soft-ground etching in c.1896 when he was experimenting with that medium. However no edition was printed at that date, only a few trial impressions. Around 1908 Vollard, Renoir’s dealer, had the idea of issuing a three-volume monograph on Renoir and including an etching with the de-luxe examples. The edition for this proposed issue was printed for Renoir and Vollard c. 1908 by Louis Fort. Ultimately Vollard abandoned the monograph and started to sell the impressions of La Danse in about 1910. The first impressions for this issue were on japan paper, as here, and these are now very scarce.
