Jean Cocteau, 1889-1963
Profil aux Points. Dot Profile.
Original drawing in black felt-tip pen. 1950. Signed and dated 'Dec 1950'. Provenance From a 1950/51 sketch book divided-up and sold by Edouard Dermit, the legatee of Cocteau's estate.
Very fine strong drawing in excellent fresh condition. On cream wove ring-bound sketch-book paper. Excellent condition. Drawn virtually to full sheet size. Sheet: 12 x 9ins. Image overall: 10 5/8 x 7 5/8ins. (270x194mm)
An outstandingly strong and characteristic drawing from the immediate post-war period. At this date Cocteau was interested in the concept of form created by linking apparently random 'dot prints'. It was derived from the ideas of his pre-war involvement with Surrealism and the desire to express the random non-subjective imagery of the subconscious.
