Auguste Herbin, 1882-1960
Eté. Summer. Composition aux Cercles.
Original stencil print (screenprint) in colours. 1959. Signed in blue ballpoint and dated 1959. Numbered (82) from the edition of 150. Published by Galerie Denise René, Paris 1959. With the Denise René stamp on the reverse. Issued as part of a series of screenprints only a few of which were hand-signed (the others have a stamped signature).
Excellent impression with brilliant fresh colours. On heavy smooth cream wove paper. Excellent condition. Sheet: 670x498mm. Image: 470x350mm. 18 1/2 x 13 3/4ins. Herbin was one of the founders of the seminal 'Abstraction-Création' movement in Paris in the 1930's. His pure analytical geometric abstract images are becoming recognized as key works in the development from intellectual abstraction to the optical abstraction of Vasarely and his followers. Only very few hand signed prints by Herbin of this period exist. The majority were issued posthumously and are stamp signed.
