Salvador Dali, 1904-1989
L'Alchimiste. The Alchemist. 1973.
Watercolour painted by the artist himself over a proof drypoint in black ink. 1973. Signed in pencil and inscribed by Dali as ‘Essai - Trial’. Unique.
Note: With a certificate from Robert Descharnes; also listed in the Descharnes archives of the works of Dali.
Provenance: Private Collection, France. Acquired direct from Dali.
This certified proof is the only existing impression with Dali’s own hand-painting of the colours and with the drypoint printed at the date the plate was drawn in drypoint by Dali.
Note: The copperplate for the underlying drypoint in this work, with alterations and with totally different colouring executed not by Dali but by the studio, was intended subsequently (c.1975) to be printed in an edition. Although details of the proposed extensive edition are recorded this edition was either never executed or was very largely destroyed when forgeries were discovered after Dali’s death.
Reference for the unissued edition: Michler- Lopsinger - Dali Etchings no 581.
