André Derain, 1880-1954
Bouquet de Fleurs. Vase of Flowers. 1940-42.
Original woodcut in ten colours - all ten colours hand painted onto the block by Derain and printed at a single pull. 1941/43. Signed in pencil. Numbered 12 in pencil from the edition of 20 impressions only. Blocks cut, hand-inked and printed by Derain at the studio of Lacourière, Paris c.1941. Very rare.
Note: Each impression of this work is unique as the colours were individually painted onto the block by Derain fort each of the individual impressions.
A great masterwork of French creative printmaking of its era.
Extremely fine impression with strong bright colours and individual inking. On pale beige-cream light wove paper. Unrestored - the paper irregularities are typical of war-time paper and with slight toning from the oils in the paint pigments. Print surface excellent. Full margins. Sheet: 15 1/8 x 10 1/8ins. Block: 10 7/8 x 6 5/8ins. (277x169mm)
