Provenance: This work was a gift from Picasso to Inès Sassier, who was a very close advisor and assistant to Picasso over a period of some 50 years. She joined the Picasso household in 1937, first as a help to Dora Maar and then to the whole Picasso entourage. She became a confidante and muse to Picasso, following him everywhere, even after her own marriage. Despite her extremely close relationship to Picasso she was never his lover.

Note: ‘Le Petit Dessinateur’ is the only lithograph study of François,e and of the children Claude and Paloma, which Picasso drew in lithography in colour. The soft and lyrical tonality of the work and the sense of protective encircling in the composition underlines the atmosphere of the short period of satisfied domesticity which was unique to his time with Françoise. Picasso started his relationship with Jacqueline very hortly after this work was completed.
