Marcel Duchamp, 1877-1968
The Clock in Profile. La Pendule de Profil
Original ‘pliage’ – folded ‘pop-up’ wall ‘sculpture’ made of art-card with added black ink. 1964. Signed and dated in pencil by Duchamp. Numbered in pencil from the edition of 111. Created by Duchamp to accompany the album ‘La Double Vue’ – ‘The Double Aspect’ (See below).
Ref: Schwarz – Marcel Duchamp works. No 373.
An exceptionally fresh example of this rare work. This example has been framed in a Perspex box which has meant that it has remained in unusually fine condition. Over all sheet size: 282 x 220 mm.
Note: In 1964 the writer Robert Lebel, who was a friend of Duchamp and of André Breton from the 1930’s Surrealist period onwards, wrote what he called a ‘literary portrait’ of Duchamp. It included many incidents and works which were (deliberately) entirely fictional but used to demonstrate Duchamp’s unique artistic inspiration and style. The edition of this ‘literary biography’ was limited to 111 examples. Each of the examples was accompanied by this so-called portrait. It is in the form of a pair of glasses and through the punched holes of each lens can be glimpsed the letters forming ‘Le Pendule de Profil’ – a typically Surreal description by Duchamp of himself.
