Arman was one of the founders of the very influential post-war movement 'Nouveau Realisme - New Realism'. With his friend Yves Klein and Tinguely, and later Cesar, Rotella and briefly Christo, he sought to express 'a new perspective and approach to reality'. He  reinterpreted familiar forms as a means of changing our visual experience of them. In some ways it was a re-birth of ideas suggested by Marcel Duchamp. but in a more powerful form,

For Arman, who came from a very musical family, the shapes of musical instruments were a principal motif and theme for  expressing these ideas. In this very beautiful version of his favourite, and famous 'deconstructed violin' he used the divided elements with their sensuous curves to mingle human form with abstract sensation.
