Original lithograph in colours. March 1973. Signed in pencil. Inscribed in pencil: 'Epreuve d'Exposition' (the impression selected by Chagall as the example to be reserved as ’not for sale’ and exhibited at his first exhibition at Galerie Maeght in Paris after he had drawn it.  Issued edition of 50 impressions plus c.10 proofs. Drawn at the artist's studio and printed at the Atelier Mourlot, Paris 1973.

The central motif of Chagall’s art at this period was to express colour and light. The manner in which lithography enabled him to use colour to create imagery with different visual parameters than in his painting was what led him to concentrate for long periods on this medium. Working alongside the great master-printers (who actually operated the presses at the Mourlot Studio) he found a whole new quality of pictorial luminescence.

‘La Table Fleurie’, here,  is a beautiful example of his handling of colour in lithography at this period of his life, glowing with happiness and light.
