This is one of a group of significant compositions that Hockney drew in the mid 1980's under the general title of 'Moving Focus'. He took central themes in his art and then used the mixed techniques of the printing (here a combination of the flat chalk colours of lithography, together with the textures of etching and aquatint) to express the changes in shape and visual form that come through strong colour and light. It was this brilliance of light and the resultant colour which was at the root of his then love-affair with California.
